Fibre Broadband Project – Service Area Information (Xplore Inc.)
|
The fibre installation in White Sands is part of the Government of Canada’s Universal Broadband Fund (UBF). This is a federally funded project intended to improve service in underserved rural areas.
Why are some streets not included? Areas were selected using federal broadband eligibility mapping based on a minimum service standard of 50 Mbps download / 10 Mbps upload (50/10). Eligibility is assessed at a detailed road-segment level, meaning some streets qualify while adjacent streets may not. |
Can the municipality change the routes?
No. The approved service area forms part of the federal funding agreement. The municipality does not determine the footprint and cannot alter the routes. Council’s role was limited to entering into a Municipal Access Agreement, which allows installation within municipal road rights-of-way but does not permit changes to the federally approved service area. Why did Council support the project? Council was informed in May 2025 and received a delegation in June 2025. The project is 100% federally funded with no municipal contribution. Declining participation would have meant no fibre installation in White Sands under this funding intake. Why is a private company delivering the project? Under the Universal Broadband Fund, only qualified telecommunications providers may apply for funding. The federal program is designed to support private-sector delivery of broadband infrastructure in underserved areas. The municipality does not build or operate telecommunications networks and was not the funding applicant. Project Timeline
Residents may review the June 2025 Council discussion and presentation on the municipality’s YouTube channel or contact the municipal office for further information. |
